Njato and Malagasy youth: on the frontline to save the forests

In October 2022, as a wildfire raged for a week in the Ambohitantely forest, Randrianjatoharimanana Tiana Solomon, known as Njato, decided to take action.

As the head of citizen mobilization and tree monitoring at Bôndy, this young nature enthusiast took the initiative to ask the Ministry of Environment at the time to organize reinforcements from Antananarivo to support efforts on the ground.
At dawn, accompanied by a group of volunteers from diverse backgrounds, he left Antananarivo. Upon arrival, they joined a total of 200 volunteers, including members of local communities, to combat the flames threatening this unique ecosystem. The fire was still visible on the horizon, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The volunteers immediately got to work: carrying water, clearing burning areas, and improvising when tools were lacking. Heat, smoke, and exhaustion were everywhere, but Njato and his team persevered. "These forests are like a home to me. Who would let their home burn?" – Njato
For him, commitment goes beyond reforestation—it is also about protecting what already exists. He vividly remembers a snail whose shell had been burned by the fire: "It was a symbol of everything we risk losing if we do nothing."
Following this mission, the engagement of young people took on a new dimension. Through Bôndy Green Army, they strengthened their actions by establishing fire prevention units, training communities, and providing effective firefighting tools. Educational nurseries were also created to involve young children in reforestation and biodiversity conservation. By ensuring the follow-up of planted trees, these young people make sure that every action has a lasting impact. Since 2022, more than 4,000 young people have joined this movement, contributing to the planting of nearly 50,000 trees, proving that Malagasy youth is capable of concrete and structured commitment to a greener Madagascar.
Njato strongly believes in the power of small actions. "Even a simple gesture, like the hummingbird in its legend, can make an impact." His message to young people is clear: "Don't wait. The world needs you, and your actions, no matter how small, can make a real difference."
Through his example, Njato demonstrates that Malagasy youth can mobilize with courage and determination to protect the country’s natural heritage. A strong reminder that, in the face of climate urgency, every action counts.
